A satisfying ending, Lee. This is what Glory intended when she brought the reporter to the bridge. She needed a third party to discover the truth she could not tell so she could die in peace. Michael's granddaughter was the perfect choice. As a reporter, she would know where to dig to uncover the truth. Nicely done, Lee.
I think that was a good ending. Two stupid kids, and no one caused the fire on purpose, but guilt about the secret messed up their lives more than the truth would have, I think. I’d say justice came at the end, though honestly I’m not sure if he was right to publish the story.
I thought about that—the story being published—but I decided that since the character was trying to be a “real” reporter, that’s what he’d do. Maybe he’d have a bit more angst about his decision since he’d be exposing his grandfather’s mistake, but then the story would be longer, and I was ready to move on. Thanks for your usual great comment.
I had to go back and read the first 3 episodes. That helped me put it all together. Yes, you could dig deeper, but short stories are just that. Short, and you packed this one story with great lines like the boulder, the bridge named Justice, and leaving the lesson about telling the truth vibrating in my head.
Wow! You reread the earlier parts. Thanks for taking that time. I still wonder if writing in serial form is a good idea, but sometimes I can’t get the whole story together in a week.
Of course, I suspected something murky in Glory's past. I think you wrapped the tale up very well. I guess it was fitting that Glory passed away. Guilt is a terrible thing to carry.
Guilt does get heavy as the years pass, and all of us have done stupid things in our youth that we wish we could redo. There are millions of stories about wishing to go back and change things. Thanks for sticking with the story!
